Johnny Davis's 31 point explosion is proof that the NBA dream isn't far away

Washington Wizards fans, look away, as former top-10 NBA draft pick turned bust, Johnny Davis, has already begun to revitalize his career overseas. It was no secret that Davis’ first NBA tenure didn’t treat him so great, as he wasn’t even able to make it past his first contract. That said, he is set on returning to the league, possibly putting the chip on his shoulder that he needed.

In his most recent game with Korfez Basket, Davis logged 31 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 10 of 15 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3-point range. This performance included multiple highlight jams and tough buckets, further proving he is capable of dominating at this level.

But just dominating a Turkish league isn’t enough for Davis to get the call back stateside. He has to also prove that the flaws that kept him off the floor in the NBA are patched and are no longer things that can hold him back.

Things like a consistent outside shot, defensive activity, limiting turnovers, efficiency as a scorer, being more productive in the half court, etc. — issues that have plagued him for his entire career.

Thus far, albeit just a three-game sample, Davis has done an amazing job at showcasing the improvement he has made in each aspect. He’s currently posting a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and scoring 22.3 points per game on 65.2% true shooting — including shooting 50% from 3-point range on 4.7 attempts per game.

He’s been active on defense as well, logging eight stocks and overall being the defender he was made out to be coming out of college. This, my friends, was the Johnny Davis we have been waiting for.

Keeping it up

Now, of course, there is still an entire season ahead. A season that will likely see ups and downs from the Badger legend, which he will have to battle through. That said, Davis is also now in a position where he can let his game do the talking.

There is no longer any real battle for playing time, and there are no strict constructs he has to fit into. For the first time since his days in Madison, Davis is now in a spot where the team runs around him, allowing him to be the best version of himself.

Whether the situation pays him dividends in the NBA or turns into a fruitful career overseas is yet to be seen, but there is no doubt that Davis has revived his playing career in just a handful of games.
