There's plenty of frustration in Madison. On Friday afternoon, the Wisconsin Badgers suffered yet another disheartening loss, this time at the hands of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. With the team hoping to avoid a losing season, Minnesota dominated and cruised to a 24-7 victory.
After the final whistle, players were angry, fans were livid and Luke Fickell was emotional. It's understandable that he was upset, but the last thing he can do is take out any of his anger on the fanbase. Unfortunately, it looked like that was a bit of the case when he was asked to deliver a message to UW supporters who are worried about the program's direction:
Luke Fickell has upset plenty of Wisconsin fans with his postgame comments
This was certainly one way to answer the question. Fickell didn't hesitate in saying he wants people to believe in what he's trying to get done with the program, but at the same time, saying he's more worried about the guys in his locker room over the fans felt a bit out of line.
What did he think would be the reaction to a statement like that? Over the past month or so, plenty of folks have been calling for Fickell to be fired. He made a massive in-season change when he decided to fire offensive coordinator Phil Longo, but not much of anything has changed on that side of the ball.
Soon enough, Fickell will be bringing in a new OC, and as we've said multiple times before, he needs to make a splash hire. There's no identity for this team, which must change. After going 7-6 last year, Fickell went 5-7 in 2024: he's a combined 12-13 since the start of last campaign.
That's just not going to cut it. Patience is wearing thin and while Fickell should be back for Year 3 running the show, we have to start seeing some improvements. Getting smacked around by rival squads is one thing, but throwing some shade at the people in the stands and those watching at home? Fickell has to know better than this.
