This offseason had some bad news for the Wisconsin Badgers when starting left tackle Kevin Heywood went down with an ACL injury that requires surgery, sidelining him for the entire 2025 season. That forced Luke Fickell to start scouring the portal for another offensive lineman that could hold up in the Big Ten, and while not necessarily needing to play left tackle, versatility would help tremendously.

Fickell may have found the perfect fit with today's transfer portal commitment, Davis Heinzen from Central Michigan. There are three reasons why Davis Heinzen is a great fit for Wisconsin.

Davis Heinzen is a necessary pickup for the Badgers following the loss of Kevin Heywood, but he's also an excellent addition for three other reasons.

1. Veteran Presence

Heinzen is entering his redshirt senior season, meaning he is nearing the end of his college career. He's been a starter for Central Michigan since his sophomore year. He knows how to be a productive offensive lineman and can be an extra leader on the line.

2. Versatility

He has also played multiple line positions, mostly at left guard and left tackle, but has earned honors no matter where he has played. He is a three-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection and has been selected in multiple positions. He will be ready to play wherever Fickell feels he will fit best, which is great for the line and, ultimately, for the Badgers.

3. Wisconsin Native

This is also a homecoming for him as he played at Manitowoc Lincoln High School. He is using his final season of eligibility to play for his home-state team. He mentions in his commitment post, "I’m excited to take the next step coming back to my home state to continue the offensive line tradition at the University of Wisconsin!"

He's a great addition for Wisconsin and the Badgers. It's nice to have a veteran leader and an all-conference award winner along the line helping protect Billy Edwards Jr.
