Wisconsin Badgers head coach Luke Fickell took the podium at Big 10 media day and did not hold back. He did everything from expressing his frustration with how the last handful of years have gone for Wisconsin to preaching optimism for what's to come.
It's never easy for a coach to admit his shortcomings, particularly one who came in with the kind of expectations Fickell had. But understanding what went wrong and adjusting the mindset is pivotal to changing a culture, something Fickell has clearly prioritized.

Now it has to translate into wins.
“The last two years for us have not been up to the standard, and I'm not shying away from that...” Fickell said. “The standard of what we have to uphold and where we have to grow as a football program — it hasn't been there.”

With that said, anyone and everyone could see that Badger football has not been up to standard thus far in the Fickell era. It doesn't take a football mastermind to point out the dysfunction Wisconsin has seen, but only a few can identify the source.
“It's not just in the wins and losses, it's in a lot of other things as well,” Fickell said. “The way we play the game, the physicality, the toughness, we have got to do a helluva lot better job at doing it, and I can promise you that we will.”
That last portion, the promise of change, is what fans should really latch onto. One could rightfully chalk it up to a coach trying to gas up his team, and rightfully so. It's hard for anyone to fully trust Fickell given his recent track record, but the confidence that change is on the way is evident in everything he says.
What makes his confidence so compelling is the reasoning behind it all. Despite Fickell not having the best track record on the field in recent years, he remains confident in his ability to evolve. He believes the culprit for Wisconsin's lack of success lies deeper, citing things like the way the program operates, how it prepares and how those processes affect everything from player development to injuries.
With that comes understanding how to evolve, something Fickell has clearly taken a deep look into.
“We know how to develop and put together a team that can be tough, nasty and disciplined — and win in this league,” Fickell said. “We also have to be aware of some of the evolutions of the things that have continued to happen.”

Fickell also made it clear that many of those changes are happening behind the scenes, things that outsiders simply don't have the ability to see. From his perspective, the program is in a much different place than it was even a year ago.
Wisconsin is headed in a different direction. Everything from how the Badgers prepare, how they operate and even how they recover has changed, all with the hope of creating a more cohesive program. It's inherently hard to buy into a program that's been so down as of late, but today, Fickell gave fans another reason to believe.
