The Alabama Crimson Tide had a frustrating year by their standards, and someone needs to be the scapegoat, and it sure isn't going to be the head coach, who is owed $70 million if fired today. One of maybe more scapegoats was Colin Hitschler, who was the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He was also an excellent Wisconsin coach and a top-notch recruiter, so it might be time for Luke Fickell to bring him back.
Wisconsin should reach out to Colin Hitschler after Alabama fired him.
Hitschler was only with the Badgers for one season in 2023, but he endeared himself to Badger fans with his ability to haul in some elite talent. He also was the co-defensive coordinator for Wisconsin and coached the safeties.
In 2023, under Hitschler's co-leadership of the defense, the Badgers limited opponents to under 100 yards rushing and less than 250 total yards per game. The 2024 season wasn't much different; the passing game was more limited for opponents at 100 yards a game, and the 2023 total was 129, but the rushing total went up more as opponents rushed at 106 yards a game. Maybe what matters most, though, especially when it comes to wins and losses? Points allowed. In 2024, it was at almost 24 points a game, while in 2023, it hovered around 20 points a game.
This isn't the main reason that fans are interested in bringing Hitschler back; it's mainly his ability to recruit. He was instrumental in landing some great recruits, and it would be a home run to have him back in that position.
The biggest concern is the "lack of room" on the coaching staff. Many fans on social media have expressed that there isn't an option position for him on the Wisconsin staff. Two things should be noted. First, there's no limit to coaches or advisors you can have, so if Fickell wanted to bring him back, he could give him any variety of titles. Second, the Wisconsin Badgers underperformed last year; who's the scapegoat for the Badgers? Or should there be one who is not named Fickell?
