Mason Reiger's NFL contract reveals he was a hot commodity as a UDFA

Reiger's undrafted status didn't stop him from getting a good chunk of money.

Mason Reiger going undrafted was one of the more surprising parts of the NFL Draft. While many assume it's his injury history that kept him from being selected as high as the fifth round. He was left to the UDFA pool for NFL teams. Yet, that pool has a wide spectrum of players. There are some who are being recruited by almost every team, and others who are just hoping for one call.

Reiger is one of those who seemingly had plenty of pursuers, as his contract with the Miami Dolphins is pretty lucrative (for a UDFA). According to Aaron Wilson, he was offered a $25,000 signing bonus as well as $150,000 guaranteed money.

UDFAs all sign the same contract in terms of an NFL league minimum deal, but teams work out ways to sweeten the pot for the best UDFAs. This is done through signing bonuses and guaranteed money. The average UDFA won't make an NFL roster, so the contract is no longer valid, nor is the money in it. However, guaranteed money and signing bonuses are set regardless of what happens. The player gets to keep that money.

So if an NFL team wants a player, they offer more and more guaranteed money. Which is exactly what happened with Reiger. A $25,000 signing bonus, as well as $150,000 guaranteed money, is a high price tag for a UDFA. It wasn't just the Dolphins that offered Reiger an opportunity. Yet, the Dolphins seemed to be the most eager and willing to give him a pretty lucrative deal.

Now, Reiger will do what he does best and prove his worth. If there was any player who would take the UDFA disrespect and outwork all the other draft picks on the Dolphins, it would be Reiger. He's going to earn a spot on the roster, and he may even surpass some of the other linebackers and edge rushers the Dolphins drafted in 2026.
