Edwards went down with an apparent knee injury. The Spartans losing Edwards is a tough blow, especially before having to take on the Badgers this weekend.
Michigan State has lost two straight games and will need to find something quick against the Wisconsin Badgers, who knocked off No. 13 Penn State on Saturday. This news doesn't help at all and forces an offense that's already struggling to turn to its backup running backs.
Edwards is a graduate transfer from UCONN who rushed for over 1,200 yards last season with 15 touchdowns. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry and had some impressive explosive runs for the Huskies last year. This year, he was off to a great start for the Spartans, but now they will need to turn to their No. 2 back.

Edwards has rushed 64 times for 304 yards this season with three touchdowns. He was even developing into a threat in the passing game, where he's averaged 8.8 yards per catch this season. Pat Fitzgerald announced at the press conference today that he won't be able to go again at any point this season.
Michigan State turned to Jaziun Patterson against Nebraska after Edwards went down. Patterson did well but didn't have the same burst as Edwards. Patterson had 16 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown. The only touchdown the Spartans had in a big loss to Nebraska. The final score was 31 to 13, and a big problem was the inability to get the offense going for Michigan State.
Patterson is also a transfer running back in his senior season, like Edwards. The veteran tailback came from Iowa, where he rushed for 296 yards last season for the Hawkeyes. He's most likely going to be the featured back going forward, though Marvis Parrish had a few carries against Nebraska too.
It will be interesting to see what Michigan State does on the ground against Wisconsin this week. The Badgers are riding high off a big win against Penn State, and a major part of their success was stopping the Nittany Lions' ground game. Wisconsin held starting running back James Peoples to only 64 yards on the ground.
The defensive line for the Badgers has been a secret weapon for the Wisconsin defense this season. As things seem to be going for both teams (Michigan State and Wisconsin) this season, this Edwards news is going to be bigger than most people realize. Not having him against Wisconsin may be a nail in the coffin for any hopes of knocking off the Badgers at Camp Randall on Saturday.
