Newly funded Badgers could make a push for star QB set to enter transfer portal

Wisconsin has had their fair share of bad luck when it comes to transfer quarterbacks. Just in the last two years, both Billy Edwards Jr. and Tyler Van Dyke missed the majority of the season due to injury after transferring in to Wisconsin.

With just two games remaining, Luke Fickell and company are seeing what they have in true freshman Carter Smith, who started the season as the fourth string quarterback. While just a freshman, his play has been underwhelming so far, and if the coaching staff deems he's not ready to take the keys, they may opt for the portal once again.

On3 Sports reported today that star quarterback Sam Leavitt is doubtful to return to Arizona State, and is actively working towards a move.

Badgers could be big spenders in the next portal cycle

With Luke Fickell set to return in 2026, and with a hefty new budget, the Badgers could be players for Leavitt. Athletic director Chris McIntosh has promised a significant investment into the program, and it could lead to a huge signing like Leavitt.

Leavitt, who threw for 2,885 yards along with 24 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions in 2024, has missed the last few games this year with a season-ending foot injury. He had 1,628 yards and 10 touchdowns to 3 interceptions before the injury.

While his brother has denied the reports, the smoke surrounding Leavitt leaving is still strong, and the Badgers would be foolish to not at least kick the tires on such an impactful player.
