It's nearly impossible for a 25-year-old with one season of "NBA-level production" to make a name for himself as a legitimate draft prospect. In Nick Boyd's case, he has only continued to defy the odds and build his résumé, shattering any barrier that has stood in his way. Boyd went through a roller coaster of a college career that saw the highs of a Final Four appearance and the lows of two first-round exits in the tournament.
However, Boyd is a persistent and consistent competitor and recently, his work and production have begun to pay off. Prior to the combine, for the most part, Boyd was absent from all major outlets' big boards and mocks. This choice, albeit disappointing for Wisconsin fans, made all the sense in the world as Boyd's game just didn't seem to match what NBA teams were looking for in a second-round pick.

However, after showcasing some defensive and playmaking layers to his game at this years NBA draft combine that he wasn't necessarily putting on display during his senior year with the Badgers, the hype around Boyd's name began to skyrocket. Now, he finds himself a part of The Athletic and CBS Sports' top-60 mock drafts, constructing his own draft stock from a once-dormant well.
What It Means
To a lot of people, mock drafts from media outlets are taken with a grain of salt, as at the end of the day, it's a person's opinion on what they think is going to happen. Although that is true, as no matter how much "insight" one has, it will be impossible to predict what a team will do. However, if multiple major media figures who have spoken to NBA executives believe a player is warranting true draft buzz, oftentimes that smoke is drawn from a real fire.
Pro move from Nick Boyd. Three-point shot has steadily improved all year. He’s going to generate paint touches. Not sure he’s a draft guy, but definitely a two-way or E10 candidate. Top 100 on my board.

Boyd being listed in these mocks doesn't necessarily mean he is guaranteed to get selected, but at the very least, his name is being heavily considered in those kinds of conversations. He still has a ways to go, with a handful of workouts and interviews still waiting on his horizon. However, Boyd has clearly built himself legitimate momentum that he has carried throughout the draft cycle, which is now paying dividends with the national media.
In simpler terms, Boyd's appearance on these mocks doesn't guarantee he is getting drafted, but rather it guarantees he's in talks with NBA teams. Whether that means he is getting drafted or being picked up as a priority UDFA remains to be seen, but there seems to be no remaining doubt as to whether he will get, at the very least, a chance to prove himself on the NBA stage.
