Badger basketball began practice earlier this week, but Thursday was the first day open to members of the media. The team will feature a lot of new faces this season, both in freshman and transfers, so getting an early look at the team is sure to be interesting as practices continue. Among the standouts of the first open practice was true freshman point guard Daniel Freitag.

According to reports, Freitag was fast and physical, something that shouldn't come as a surprise as Wisconsin also once recruited Freitag to play football.

His finishing ability at the rim was also a positive from the young guard, something that the Badgers covet and is a crucial skill for BIg Ten guards. Head coach Greg Gard had some good things to say about Freitag, but noted he still needed to work on his understanding of the game.

“The athletic ability is there. It’s just a matter of maturing in terms of how you see the game," said Gard in an interview with Zach Heilprin. "You gotta know when you're in a school zone and when you're on the interstate."

Still, it's a reportedly good start for the freshman who could play some significant minutes for the Badgers this season. He'll be in competition with transfer Camren Hunter for the starting point guard role, but both will see the court often regardless of the depth chart listing. The Badgers open their season on November 4th against Holy Cross.
