New Badger Xavier Amos Named One of the Best Fits in the Portal by 247 Sports
One of the newest members of Wisconsin Basketball was named one of the best fits from the portal in 2024. 247 Sports put out its list of which players they thought found the best landing spots and Xavier Amos was nominated as a sleeper pick.
In the 'Off-ball wing/4' category which they define as "low-usage, high-efficiency players who can stretch the floor," Amos, the Northern Illinois transfer, was listed as a sleeper and the number six best fit with his new home.
Wisconsin obviously didn't get the best player in the portal, but they got a player that fits their needs as well as Amos'. Amos is a 6'9" forward who head coach Greg Gard said actually has a lot more wing skills than they first thought. Last season at NIU he shot 49.6% from the field and 38.5% from three as a big man.
The Badgers won't need Amos to drop 26 every night (although he did against Big Ten opponent Northwestern last year), but he can space the floor with his shooting. That's something the Badgers really lacked with Tyler Wahl last year and they're definitely hoping that Amos can give a boost to their perimeter shooting game as long, lean forward.
How the new Badgers roster takes shape is yet to be seen, but you can bet your bottom dollar they'll be a better three-point shooting team this year, and Amos will have a lot to do with that. It should be a match made in heaven for both player and team.
