Wisconsin Badgers football: What to know about Western Michigan
The Broncos are bringing back experienced players on offense.
On offense, the Broncos will start quarterback Hayden Wolff. Wolff, who transferred to WMU from Old Dominion, threw for 1505 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions last season. He started last year as the third-string quarterback behind Jack Salopek and Treyson Bourget, but he played in eight games and started the last five. Wolff had his highest passer rating of 169.1 last season against rival Central Michigan in a 38-28 Broncos win.
Leading ground gainer Jalen Buckley was named a Freshman First-Team All-American by The Athletic. He was also a FWAA Freshman All-American and a Third-Team All-MAC conference performer. Buckley eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in the Bronco's final game last season, a 34-10 loss against Bowling Green.
Two wide receivers Badger fans should know about are Kenneth Womack and Anthony Sambucci. Womack, a graduate student who previously played at Sacred Heart, was a First Team All-MAC performer and led the conference with 76 receptions. He was the Broncos' leader in receiver yards.
While Sambucci was fourth on the team in receiving yards behind Womack, Leroy Thomas, and tight end Black Bosma, he was also on the Third-Team All-MAC list. With Thomas's graduation, Sambucci will be the second read for Wolff after Womack.
On the offensive line, the Broncos boast the most talented center in Jacob Gideon. According to Pro Football Focus, Gideon was named the top conference center on the First-Team All-MAC list. Next to him is guard Addison West, a First-Team All-MAC performer and top-rated guard in the conference by PFF.
