Quick Reactions to Wisconsin's Loss vs Penn State
Wisconsin punter Atticus Bertrams was the MVP for the Badgers, constantly pinning Penn State deep in their own territory and even converting a clutch first down on a broken punt play. He's been an unsung hero for much of the season, but he really established himself as a top punter in the conference in this game.
Nathanial Vakos, despite his struggles, has been elite from beyond 50 yards. He hit his third kick of 50 and beyond in the first quarter to remain perfect on the season from that range.
Will Pauling dropped his seventh and then eighth pass of the year as his struggles catching the ball continue. In fact, the wide receiver group as a whole didn't do Braedyn Locke any favors in this one as the ball hit hands and then the turf way too often.
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was cooking in the first half before getting injured on an awkward tackle right before break. He was 14 of 18 with a touchdown and was really slicing up the defense outside of a few negative plays.
Locke's pick six in the third quarter marked his fifth straight game with an interception and killed the Badgers' momentum. He's been very streaky since taking over for an injured Tyler Van Dyke and hasn't been able to nip those turnovers in the bud. Wisconsin was up 10-7 at the time, and the Allar-less Penn State offense was struggling. Just a brutal sequence.
Tawee Walker scored for the tenth time this season, but outside of that, he really got nothing going on ground. The running back finished with 22 carries for only 59 yards.
The Badger defense fell apart in the second half against a backup quarterback, allowing 14 unanswered in the fourth quarter. They were up and down most of the game, but they really missed an opportunity after the Allar injury.
In a game that felt very winnable, Wisconsin now sits at 5-3 with a lot of questions to answer. The quarterback play needs improvement, the defense is much too streaky, and Luke Fickell is now 0-5 against ranked opponents.
