Wisconsin's women's basketball is going to look different next season under new head coach Robin Pingeton. Not just because she's had to replace the majority of the roster, but also because she has a different strategy, both offensively and defensively. Back in May, she spoke to the Big Ten Network and revealed exactly what her strategy will be, both on and off the court.
Pingeton Shares Her Game Plan for Rebuilding Wisconsin Women’s Basketball
Wisconsin's new culture, according to Pingeton, will be about a team that is bigger than one player and one person. That these ladies will come in as basketball players but "leave as sisters." She wants a good culture in the locker room and a heavy teamwork mentality. That's the culture she is trying to build.
Specifically, the vision for the offense is about playing fast. She plans to install a lot of motion and quick reactions, the ability to take the ball from coast to coast and quickly. Pingeton isn't interested in a grind-it-out offense but a fast-paced one.
"Ideally we want to recruit the players that can play in transition. This is such a tough league and having to grind it out in the half court sets makes it really challenging...We like spacing, it's really important, motion concepts, read and react. "Robin Pingeton
Defensively, there won't be one set identity, according to Pingeton, that they will adjust based on the team that they are playing. She plans to thoroughly utilize scouting reports and understand what other teams are bringing to the table, preparing to capitalize on the other team's weaknesses.
"Defensively, we're pretty scouting report specific, and so that'll vary from game to game, but players that are really gritty, hard-nosed, that want to get on the floor for loose balls and compete at a high level. "Robin Pingeton
