This isn't the news of another commitment for Luke Fickell and his coaches, but it's no question gigantic for the Wisconsin football team. That's because one of the team's leaders on the defensive side of the ball has decided he'll be back next campaign.
In recent weeks, there had been speculation that perhaps we had seen the last of Preston Zachman with the Badgers. However, in a great update, No. 14 let everyone know that he will be back in Madison for his final year of eligibility. That's right, Zachman will be back for his sixth fall with the Badgers:
Wisconsin DB Preston Zachman announced he'll be back for Year 6 with the Badgers
This is news that countless Badgers fans are celebrating widely. Zachman will provide the defense with needed experience for the 2025 campaign. Despite it being a down 5-7 year for Wisconsin in 2024, Zachman paved the way with 58 total tackles and two interceptions.
The year before in 2023, Zachman finished with 48 total tackles and two interceptions. He has meant quite a bit to the program in recent years and it's exciting to know that he'll be back on the field in what's going to be a massive year for Fickell and his staff.
In a bit of a blow, Zachman will be playing under a different position coach, as Wisconsin co-DC and safeties coach Alex Grinch is no longer with the program. On Tuesday afternoon, news broke that Grinch was offered and accepted the DC job at UCF.
While Fickell is going to have to find a new safeties coach, it doesn't take away from the fact that some important pieces will be back for Wisconsin in '25. Add in the big-time gets via the portal and things are looking up for the program as a whole. Zachman has only made things better with his Tuesday update.
