Tempering expectations for Wisconsin's camp breakout Eugene Hilton Jr.

Among the many Wisconsin Badger names that have picked up some steam thus far in training camp, one of the more consistently high producers is sophomore receiver Eugene Hilton Jr. The Badgers always knew they had something with him, hence the rush to get him to return this offseason after he announced he was entering the transfer portal.

Once back on campus, Hilton never looked back, clearly putting the work in to take his game to the next level and be the player the Badgers recruited him to be. Now, as camp carries on, he has continued to make plays and look like the go-to guy for Wisconsin this year.

But the real question remains: Is this hype a bit too much?

It's been fun to see a Badger receiver be a consistent separator and playmaker, as fans have become all too accustomed to that not being the case in Madison, especially in recent years. However, some are placing 1,000-yard and 10-plus-touchdown expectations on Hilton, a height that only a few of college football's best players reach each season. Would it be amazing if he did that? Of course, and every Wisconsin fan should be over the moon if that's the case. However, it's also important to temper expectations a bit and err on the side of realism when it comes to projections.

Last season, the Badgers' leading receiver was tight end Lance Mason, who racked up 398 yards and four touchdowns. Hilton himself grabbed eight catches for 91 yards in his limited action, showing flashes of what he could be, but by no means showing the prowess of the upper-echelon college wideouts.

It is, of course, worth noting that Wisconsin had just about the worst possible quarterback situation last season, as injuries tore through the room and left Wisconsin with games in which its punter was the leading passer. It's no secret that the Badgers made it a point of emphasis to improve the room this offseason, bringing in Colton Joseph, who projects as one of the better starters in the Big Ten, along with Ryan Hopkins and Deuce Adams providing good insulation behind him.

With that in mind, it's fair to expect a leap from Hilton, possibly even one that sees him as the team's leading pass catcher. But in all likelihood, it won't be an All-Conference-level campaign like some expect. Wisconsin, by all accounts, will be leaning on the run game this year, which in turn will take opportunities from Hilton, along with the receiver and tight end rooms having a lot of mouths to feed.

A more realistic expectation for him is somewhere in the 400-700-yard range with a handful of touchdowns mixed in. That may seem a bit low for a guy who is getting the hype that Hilton has in camp, but considering the constructs of the offense and the fact that he is a true sophomore, fans should be very pleased with that level of production from him and be ecstatic if it's anything more.
