Wisconsin Badgers football has undoubtedly been through one of its darkest phases in program history in recent years, struggling to reach even a bowl game. This has been very frustrating for Badger fans around the country, as they had become accustomed to dominance and winning ways prior to this rough stretch — and rightfully so. However, for the first time since season one of the Luke Fickell era, things are looking up for the Badgers, in large part due to one key factor: the defense.

Throughout the glory days of Wisconsin football, two things always seemed to remain consistent: a dominant run game and stifling defense. The Badgers have still managed to put together some solid defensive campaigns in recent years, winning a few extra games and staying competitive in others they had no business being in because of it. But even through the highs, they still haven’t been able to emulate what they once had — until now.

Wisconsin has a group of star sophomores

The Wisconsin defense seems as if it is finally turning the corner back to what it once was, in large part due to the star linebacker duo of Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano. Both Posa and Catalano burst onto the scene down the stretch of last year, seizing every opportunity they were given.

Posa in particular was all over the field over the Badgers’ final five games, logging 50 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble over that stretch. Catalano was great down the stretch as well, especially against Washington where he recorded 19 tackles, two of which were for a loss, along with one sack. In short, the duo was dominant and looks primed to take another leap heading into year two.

The Badgers boast a very well rounded defensive unit

However, as we all know, it takes more than just two players to complete a defense. With that said, Wisconsin has put together a fairly well-rounded unit, with multiple guys shining in spring camp. Returners like Sebastian Cheeks and Tyreese Fearbry have reportedly turned heads with their pass-rushing ability, while newcomers like Javan Robinson and Marvin Burks have stood out in the secondary.

The Badgers still have a lot of work and development to do before the season rolls around, but with the way things are looking, Wisconsin could be in for a “vintage defensive season,” returning back to the winning days of old.
