Greg Gard has never won a game as the No. 5 seed. Wisconsin, as a program, is now only 1-6 as the No. 5 seed. It's the cursed seed, and the 83-82 loss to No. 12High Point only makes it feel even more cursed. Gard has been the head coach in now three of those six games. He's 0-3 in those contests, and yet that's not the only NCAA Tournament stat that has fans wondering if he can win in the tournament.
Gard's resume in March is abysmal, no matter the seed. Wisconsin has been to the NCAA Tournament 10 times under Gard and yet has only once been to the Sweet 16. That was in 2017. Since then, in 2018 and 2023, the Badgers missed the tournament. Lost in 2019, 2024, and 2026 as the No. 5 seed, lost in the round of 32 every other year. Yikes. The Wisconsin fans who want him gone have justification for this alone.

Greg Gard absolutely has no idea how to get deep in the NCAA Tournament

The problem with Gard is not that he isn't a good coach. He proves it every single year by taking a team that doesn't have business being towards the top of the Big Ten, and puts them there. He develops players who weren't getting looks elsewhere into stars. He knows how to build a backcourt, and he can get bigs shooting the three.
He can also win huge games during the season and absolutely crushes the Big Ten Tournament year after year. However, come NCAA Tournament time, he can't figure it out. He continues to coach his teams into way too early exits. It's one thing to lose a game when you are supposed to, but he's been on the wrong end of an upset over and over in his history with the program.
Wisconsin won't fire up, but this needs to come up in his performance review because it's exhausting as a fan to watch a great team come up short in March Madness as a yearly tradition. There has to be a solution, and Gard needs to figure it out.
