Wisconsin Badger fans were given some somewhat unsettling news recently in regard to the standing of former Badger Vinny Anthony II on the Atlanta Falcons’ depth chart. Although it had seemed as if Anthony was doing nothing but impressing in camp thus far, a recent quote from his offensive coordinator suggests that he may not be the 53-man roster lock that many previously thought.
In a recent presser, Tommy Rees — the Falcons’ OC — was asked to discuss some receivers behind Drake London that had stood out thus far in camp. He proceeded to bring up names such as Olamide Zaccheaus, Zachariah Branch, Chris Blair and Dylan Drummond, citing all of them as having strong camp outings.
The key name left out there, of course, being Anthony.

This did come as quite a surprise considering the fact that all signs have pointed to him having a great camp thus far. Fans and media alike have become fond of Anthony and his game, highlighting the value he brings both as a traditional receiver, but also as an all-around gadget guy.
Anthony is fresh off of his strongest preseason game as well, in which he caught four passes for 43 yards — which was by far his strongest total to date. On top of that, Anthony has been great as both a gunner and in kick return thus far in preseason, showcasing all of the value he can bring to the team.
It is worth noting that it’s a possibility that Rees either forgot to mention Anthony or doesn’t view him at the same position as the rest of the group. There’s always a chance that he categorizes Anthony as more of a weapon than a bona fide receiver, which would make sense considering the points previously brought up.
It’s also worth noting that it’s not entirely Rees’ decision as to who makes the team and who doesn’t. Obviously, it’s better to be in the good graces of the coach who heads the side of the ball you primarily reside on, but as long as Anthony impresses everyone else, he still could be a shoe-in to make the 53.
Nonetheless, the report was a bit disappointing and not at all what Wisconsin fans were expecting. It’s still to be seen if Rees’ answer has any merit in the actual decision-making process, but for the time being, it’s a roadblock in what has otherwise been a very momentous first few months in the NFL for Anthony.
