For as little success as the Wisconsin Badgers have seen in the Luke Fickell era, it has likely come as a surprise to many to see the Badgers achieve the level of recruiting success they have in recent weeks. Just last year, Wisconsin fans were left frustrated and disgruntled with Fickell as he couldn't even seem to land mid-level in-state talent, creating questions as to whether the team could operate under his command long term.

However, with the recent recruiting spree he has been on, fans have been momentarily affirmed in Fickell, although he still has a lot to prove. The sheer volume of players the Badgers have landed may seem overwhelming, especially for it being this early in the cycle, but nonetheless, Wisconsin has been moving in the right direction.

Stacking Up the Numbers

As of right now, albeit early in the cycle, the Badgers rank 23rd in On3's and 13th in 247Sports' 2027 recruiting class rankings. Blue-blood programs like Oregon, Michigan, Auburn, Georgia, and many more that typically own the top of the recruiting boards currently sit behind Wisconsin, further proving just how monumental this recruiting spree has been.

For reference, the Badgers' 2026 class ranked 78th in the composite rankings, with the last time Wisconsin reached the top 20 being all the way back in 2021. In other words, it's been a while since the Badgers have put together a truly elite recruiting class.

To add even more, Wisconsin is likely not done yet, as there is still room for the Badgers to fill out this class. Fickell is likely done, or at least close to done, for the time being, as it would make sense for Wisconsin to use its final scholarships in the class of 2027 on players after getting some senior-year varsity film on them.

However, even if the Badgers don't get many more players and are forced to work with something similar to what they have, a foundation has been built for future success. At the end of the day, human beings are trend followers, so when other top high school recruits see their peers committing to Wisconsin, it makes them even more interested in checking out what Madison has to offer. Lucky for the Badgers, Madison sells itself, especially in the summer, so now all that's left for Fickell and Co. is to prove that they can maximize the incoming talent and turn it into wins.
