Tonight's National Championship Game will be played between Ohio State and Notre Dame. So the big question is: who do fans want to win? Well, for the Badger faithful, it may come down to simply choosing the lesser of two evils.
The Ohio State Buckeyes enter as the favorite for tonight's game, but certainly not in Wisconsin fans' hearts. The Badgers are in the midst of a 10-game losing streak to Ohio State, dating back to 2011. Their all-time head to head record isn't much better, with Wisconsin only winning 18 of the 86 games. It's safe to say Ohio State has been a constant annoyance and thorn in the Badgers' side and they'll receive very little support from The Grateful Red.
True, having a Big Ten team win the Chip would be a win for the conference as a whole, but Ohio State...it almost seems not worth it.
Notre Dame on the other hand, while not a rival, still won't receive much adoration from Badger fans. Universally hated, the Fighting Irish always find ways to perturb various fan bases. One of the hardest pills to swallow for Badger fans this year is that almost the entirety of the Notre Dame staff is made up of former Luke Fickell assistants from his days at Cincinnati.
Notre Dame's head coach, Marcus Freeman, was Fickell's defensive coordinator. The Irish's offensive coordinator, quarterback and wide receiver coaches are all former Fickell assistants as well. It stings a little bit to see, considering the disastrous hires he's made while at Wisconsin --Phil Longo cough, cough. So to see what could have been might be a bit too much to stomach.
So while a tie is impossible, a competitive, fun game would be the only silver lining for Badger fans looking to catch tonight's matchup between the two irritating programs.
