The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team received a bit of disappointing news earlier in the week, as four-star and top-100 player in the class of 2027 Jack Thelen announced his decommitment from Wisconsin. This, of course, sent Badgers fans into a bit of a frenzy, and rumors circulated about whether the highly esteemed 2027 class was going to crumble.

Thelen’s teammate and fellow ’27 commit Babaoucarr Ann — who many thought of as a package deal alongside the 7-footer — hasn’t given any kind of indication that he is leaning in either direction. The other commit, and the most highly touted of the trio, Jalen Brown, has made his stance clear, however, on where he stands.

The quote was simple: “I’m a Badger.”

Calm, yet a strong reassurance that he has no plans of exiting the program anytime soon. Some assumed that because Brown made the move to Sequoia Charter — an out-of-state prep school in Arizona — he, too, may be considering relocation.

But, as far as the world can tell, Brown has no plans of leaving and is committed to staying with the program to which he expressed his loyalty. Wisconsin had been recruiting him from very early in the process, first offering him as an underclassman after he attended the Badgers’ own camp.

Reaping the Rewads

Now, Wisconsin has been able to reap the rewards of his steady development, watching him progress along the way. Brown has been highly touted by those who have been able to watch him in person, with the common themes being tied to his steady growth.

Continuing that growth and then translating it to the college court is, of course, going to be the question long term. But given his already well-refined skill set and plus positional size, Brown shouldn’t have much of an issue finding his way onto the court.

The developing handle and playmaking ability in particular are intriguing, as Brown could project as a point guard long term if he were to continue to progress. As of now, he fits in more seamlessly as a secondary creator, capable of being a spot-up threat away from the ball, on top of handling the occasional pick-and-roll rep.

His defensive ability, too, will allow him to scale up to wings and down to guards, making it easier for Brown to fit into given lineups. Nonetheless, the Badgers found their guy in Wauwatosa native.
