The Minnesota Golden Gophers pulled off the unthinkable last night, getting their first conference win, and not against some low-level Big Ten team like Washington, but they did against a tied-for-first-place team, the Michigan Wolverines. The way they did it was also impressive, buzzer beater by Dawson Garcia followed by a court storming. It was a wild night of Big Ten basketball and Wisconsin fans looked on as their rival pulled this incredible win off.
Wisconsin fans immediately found the trolling and the silver lining of the win for Minnesota.
There were calls to extend Ben Johnson, who is 50-63, as a head coach of the struggling Golden Gophers. Wisconsin has had no problems winning against the Johnson-coached Minnesota team. This idea of keeping him around so Wisconsin can continue to win and Minnesota can continue to be at the bottom of the Big Ten is a good rivalry troll.
Others found the silver lining in the win, that it helps Wisconsin in the standings and increases chances that the Badgers can get towards the top and maybe even make a play for the top of the Big Ten. Knocking off Michigan is a big step toward that goal.
The Golden Gophers got their first conference win but they are still last in the Big Ten at 1-6 in the conference and 9-9 overall. They are behind a struggling Washington Huskies team that is 1-6 and 10-8. At the top is still Michigan State who is 6-0 in the Big Ten and 15-2 overall. While the Badgers are still two games removed from the Spartans at 4-2, they are now only a game back from the Michigan Wolverines, who fall from undefeated in the Big Ten standings to now 5-1.
Minnesota is off to play Iowa on the road on Tuesday while the Badgers will be playing Saturday at USC.
