Many storylines came about from Luke Fickell’s appearance at Big 10 media day, with the majority of them — surprisingly — being positive. Despite back-to-back years without a bowl appearance and, by all accounts, entering the season on the hot seat, Fickell had a swagger and confidence about him that undeniably instills some optimism.
He was both reflective of his failures in the past, aware of the situation he was in and wildly confident that the program he has been asked to lead has turned a corner. He answered questions with conviction and promise, instilling the thought in everyone's mind that the Wisconsin Badgers are not to be slept on this season.

As for the fans' reactions, many were skeptical. This kind of confidence could just be cope from Fickell, as he likely knows better than anyone else that this could be a make-or-break year for the future of the program. However, a much more optimistic portion of the fan base is walking away from the day pleasantly surprised by his demeanor.
Speaking it Into Existence
Fans had never heard Fickell speak the way he did or carry himself the way he did, and as a result, some new hope was instilled. It wasn't just baseless claims that Fickell latched onto either, as he cited the ways in which he has turned the program around. He brought up everything from added depth at the quarterback position, a small sector of Wisconsin football that has bitten the team in recent years.
He brought up how he's changing things behind the scenes, taking a new approach to preparation, film study, recovery, practice plans — everything. It's obviously tough for outsiders to know every detail of what has transpired, but from the outside looking in, it seems as if Fickell has rewired the program down to its core.

Because of that change within, fans can now expect change on the outside as well. Whether it's right for expectations to be a season that lands the Badgers firmly in the top 25 or not is a conversation in and of itself, but at the very least, Wisconsin fans can expect positive change.
There is still a lingering sense of pessimism to an extent as, at the end of the day, the only real way to win Badger fans over is to win games. But until the first kickoff on Sept. 6, Wisconsin fans have every reason to believe that things are indeed moving in the right direction.
