Wisconsin hiring "safe" Chris McIntosh replacement would be a crushing misstep

Wisconsin needs to look outside for the next hire.

Wisconsin is in a strange spot right now with Chris McIntosh's departure. The person making the hire, or at least taking the lead on it, is interim chancellor Eric Wilcots. The keyword is "interim." You never want an interim "anything" hiring another position. It doesn't usually bode well. It also doesn't help that Wisconsin isn't known for splashy athletic director hires. Typically, it's an internal name or someone in the Badger family.

That's not always bad, and it's actually been downright amazing at times (i.e., Barry Alvarez), but it's a scary proposition right now. For Wisconsin could easily pull the trigger on the "safe" hire and remove the interim tag on Marcus Sedberry. In fact, don't be surprised if that's exactly what happens.

It's the safe option, it's the easy option, it's the type of option an interim would do. Why? It doesn't rock the boat at all. Keeps the status quo, adds consistency. The problem with consistency here is that it hasn't exactly gone swimmingly under McIntosh. Keeping Seberry as the athletic director would be a crippling decision. Let's go so far as to call it a "crushing misstep."

Don't be surprised, though, for McIntosh wasn't well-loved by the fanbase for a variety of reasons, but he was well-liked in-house. It seems as if his ideas were propped up and supported. Sedberry was part of the "solutions" that McIntosh was proposing.

It also sure seems like Sedberry was getting gassed up today on social media by outgoing chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and outgoing athletic director Chris McIntosh. That could signal bad news for anyone who wants Wisconsin to think outside of the box and get an athletic director who can put the house back in order.

This isn't to say that Sedberry couldn't succeed and be the right guy for the future. Maybe he will bookmark this article, print it out, hang it up, and wear it like a banner when he succeeds. That would be amazing and good for him. However, for now, it seems like keeping the status quo would be a crushing misstep.
