Thankfully, the worst-case scenario was avoided for the Wisconsin football team this week. On Thursday night in the first half, quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., making his debut for the Badgers, went down with a non-contact knee injury.
At that point, all you could do was shake your head. The thought of this team being cursed is what everyone had on their minds, including the one and only Melvin Gordon. Just like everyone back home, Gordon was borderline speechless, saying 'there's no way our luck is this bad.' Hard to disagree with that, as this marks the third year in a row Wisconsin QB injury drama has arrived for the program:
There’s no way our luck is this bad smh …. Let’s go O’Neil. Next man up baby. Prayers to that young QB hope he’s okay

Billy Edwards Jr. has thankfully avoided a serious injury for Wisconsin football
In some good news for Gordon and everyone else who was worried about Edwards, it was reported on Friday that he has been diagnosed with a knee sprain and he'll be considered week-to-week moving forward. Next up on the schedule for the Badgers is a Week 2 dance with Middle Tennessee.
In the season-opening win over Miami (Ohio), backup QB Danny O'Neil took the field in relief of Edwards and he looked much sharper in the second half running the offense. He finished the night throwing for 120 yards, one touchdown, and one interception he'd like to get back.
With Edwards banged up like this and Alabama coming up in Week 3, there's no question in anyone's mind that Fickell needs to sit the Maryland transfer and let him get as close to 100 percent as possible for the road showdown in Tuscaloosa against the Tide.
With the greatest of respect for the Middle Tennessee program, it's a game that Wisconsin should have no issues with regardless of who's at center. When Edwards first got hurt, it seemed like maybe his campaign would be in question. It's not, which is a relief for Gordon and so many others. We'll see how quickly he can work his way back, but don't be surprised if he's good to go for Week 3.
