Wisconsin grabbed a statement win in their dismantling of the Iowa Hawkeyes 116-85 this weekend. Thanks to this huge win over a confereneightce opponent, the Badgers jumped up 8 spots in the NET rankings. They went from 33 before the game to 25 after the big win, and that's a huge jump for a team looking to find their way back into the top 25 AP poll.
Wisconsin is ranked 25 in the NET rankings.
As a reminder, the NET rankings are determined by the NCAA using a system that takes in a ton of factors. Here's how it's defined on NCAA.com, "The NET includes more components than just winning percentage. It takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses." The whole system is explained well here.
The other good news from this win is that Iowa is a NET 55 team, which means that with the win even at home for Wisconsin, it's a quad-two win. If Iowa finds other success in the Big 10, that could even improve to a quad-one win if they can climb into the top 30.
While it's frustrating that Wisconsin has three losses, all three were quad-one losses. Illinois and Marquette are both top 10 NET teams, while Michigan is not far behind at 11 in the NET ranking. These losses all falling back-to-back-to-back is brutal; it's not going to kill the Wisconsin resume. The Badgers have yet to have a "bad" resume loss. They also have two quad-one wins over Arizona and Pitt. Many pundits are already seeing Wisconsin as a decent 5-6 seed in the tournament.
The Badgers have also moved to 26th in the KenPom rankings, and both of those should cement them into the category of at least receiving votes for the AP Top 25. Monday will determine what it looks like to be officially ranked again this season.
