The first big blow for the Wisconsin women's basketball team after Marisa Moseley's resignation happened today, as star center Carter McCray announced she's entering the transfer portal. McCray played in all 30 games this season and was one of the team's most consistent and vocal leaders. This is probably the first of many dominoes to fall for Wisconsin women's hoops this offseason.

Wisconsin center Carter McCray has announced she is entering the Transfer Portal

McCray is a 6'1 sophomore out of Oberlin, Ohio and will have a few more years to play wherever she lands next. She was one of the stars of a struggling team this last season in Madison. She averaged 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds. She shot 56.7% from the field. She ended the season with five double-doubles and was often one rebound or one point shy of that mark.

Wisconsin fans knew that the departure of Wisconsin's head women's basketball coach, Marisa Moseley, would lead to departures. Even recognizing the stars of the team would find greener and more stable pastures. However, this is the first player to jump into the portal and so there's a real sense of, "Welp! It's happening."

The expectation is that there will be a few more players that also move along and that the new head coach for the Badgers will be undertaking a complete rebuild. That there may be very few if any players left on the roster upon the hiring of the next coach. However, that all depends on speed of hire and how quick that coach can identify needs, rally any of the players the coach wants to retain, and help get the culture started in the right direction again.

For now, it's sad to see McCray go, but it's understandable. We wish her well in her next destination.
