Wisconsin track & field advanced numerous athletes to the NCAA Championships

The NCAA track & field prelims were held from Thursday May 25th – Sunday May 29th.  Several men and women from Wisconsin Badger track & field moved on to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In short, the longer distances on the track and select field events were kind to Wisconsin hopes.

On Thursday, the Badgers had two male and X females qualify to the NCAA Championships.

"Senior Malachy Schrobilgen finished 10th in the 10,000 meters to qualify for his second career NCAA track and field championship, while junior Riley Budde was 11th in the men’s hammer throw to earn his first career trip to the NCAA outdoor meet."

In the 10K, Schrobilgen was in 20th place at 4800 meters but moved up to 12th over the next 2000 meters.  In his heat, 1st through 11th place was separated by less than 10 seconds.  Budde secured his NCAA Championship spot with his final throw moving from 15th place to 11th with his third toss of 65.12′ (the top 12 advanced).

More from Badger of Honor

On Friday, freshman men’s pole vaulter Rashid Coulibaly did just enough to get through prelims to make the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  Two Badger men made the NCAA Championships in the shot put.

"Coulibaly, the No. 37 seed in the competition, earned a pair of final-attempt clearances, including one at 17 feet, 6 ½ inches, to earn one of the 12 spots at this year’s national meet.Wisconsin juniors Riley Budde and Josh McDonald finished 11th and 12th in the men’s shot put to advance to the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships."

A pair of Badger women qualified for the NCAA Championships on Friday.  Sophomore Emma Haugen cleared 5’10.5″ in the high jump to tie for 7th place and secure qualification.  Senior Brenna Detra finished 10th in the 400 hurdles in a time of 58.43.

On Saturday, junior Joe Hardy claimed the final qualifying spot in the 5000-meters, with a time of 14:36.16.  Junior Riley Buddle came up less than a full meter short of qualifying in the men’s discus.  For Badger women, junior Sarah Disanza finished 5th in the 5000-meters in 16.35.33.  Unfortunately, sophomore Amy Davis missed out on joining Disanza in Eugene by just .006.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships will take place at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon from June 7th – June 10th.
