Wisconsin Football Countdown: No. 2, Jamar Fletcher

As the countdown to the first Wisconsin football game of the season continues, Badger of Honor is taking a look at Badgers by the numbers, checking in on a different Badger or Badgers players who wore the number corresponding with the remaining days until the Badgers head to Texas to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday, Sept. 5.

With kickoff of the 2015 Badgers season double-digit hours away, we take a look back at the No. 2 in Wisconsin football history, former Badgers defensive back Jamar Fletcher.

Fletcher played for the Badger from 1998 to 2000, helping Wisconsin to back-to-back Rose Bowls.

Fletcher was a ball-hawk throughout his Wisconsin career, totaling 21 interceptions during his time at UW, a school record. He also leads the Badgers in single-season and career intercept return yardage, as well as single-season (3) and career (5) interceptions returned for touchdowns.

He had seven interceptions apiece in the 1998, 1999 and 2000 seasons. He had a three-interception game in 2000 against Oregon.

He’s second all-time in UW history with 57 career passes defended and is third all-time with 36 pass breakups.

Fletcher won the 2000 Jim Thorpe Award and the 2000 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Award. He was a first team All-American in 1999 and a unanimous first team All-American in 2000. He was a first team All-Big Ten player in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Fletcher was the 26th overall selection in the 2001 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He played in the NFL for nine years for the Dolphins, the San Diego Chargers, the Detroit Lions, the Houston Texans and the Cincinnati Bengals.

He played in 105 NFL games, starting 12, totaling 193 tackles, seven interceptions and 26 pass deflections in his career.

Who wore No. 2 first?

• Center Kenneth Krueger was the first Badger to wear No. 2 in 1931.

Who wears No. 2 now?

• Starting quarterback Joel Stave currently wears No. 2 for the Badgers. Stave was named the starter months ago, and will lead the Badgers against Alabama on Saturday.
