Big Ten Hockey Set for A Big Weekend that Could Shake Up Standings

Much like the Wisconsin Basketball team, the Wisconsin Hockey team is set for a huge weekend that could shake up the hockey standings once again. For much of the conference play it has been a three dog race between Wisconsin, Penn State, and powerhouse Minnesota. Heading into last weekend, the Badgers sat tied for the top with Minnesota, but after a two poor losses to Penn State, the Badgers sit in the passenger seat heading into the final few weekends. As the landscape shifts to this weekend, Wisconsin could get some help to once again even up the standings.

The Badgers are set for a two game against Michigan at home this weekend,  but with Michigan being towards the bottom of the Big Ten with just two conference wins its a chance for the Badgers to pick up a big four points with two wins. However a large focus will also be on Happy Valley as the Nittany Lions welcome first place Minnesota for a two game set. Depending on the results of those games, the Badgers could be in soul possession of first by the end of the weekend.

As it sits right now, Minnesota leads the league with 27 points, Wisconsin trailing at 24, and Penn State bringing up the rear at 22. The results of this weekend will go a long way as we head into the final stretch. Wisconsin will need at least two points to likely keep pace, but four would be huge. The Badgers split with Michigan in early December on the road, but should be able to sweep in the goaltending bounces back. Michigan doesn’t have the firepower to light up the scoreboard, so if the Badgers can stonewall some large chunks of time they should be able to keep pace. Its likely that each team will have an eye on the out of town scoreboard as the results we get will paint the landscape of over the next two weekends as the Badgers play at Minnesota and Penn State in two of the last three weekends. With the Badgers currently sitting outside of the projected field, good results could play into the Badgers postseason plans.
