Isaac Guerendo is an incoming freshman from Wisconsin’s 2018 recruiting class. He’s the newest player in the Freshman Focus series from Badger of Honor.

Wisconsin is loaded at wide receiver this season, returning its top four players from last year’s squad in Quintez Cephus, Danny Davis, A.J. Taylor, and Kendric Pryor. To add to its embarrassment of riches at the position, the coaching staff then proceeded to pick up four promising prospects in the 2018 recruiting class: Aron Cruickshank, Taj Mustapha, A.J. Abbott, and Isaac Guerendo.

Guerendo was rated as a 3-star prospect out of Avon, Indiana and chose the Badgers over offers from Air Force, Army, Ball State, and Eastern Michigan.

He could be the biggest steal in Wisconsin’s 2018 class.

Guerendo has blazing speed and explosive athleticism, which was on full display earlier this month when he led Avon to the state title in track and field. He was the champion in the 100 meter dash, recording a blistering time of 10.51.

Guerendo could very well be the fastest player on the Wisconsin roster from the moment he steps on campus. That speed gives him a chance to be a dynamic player in Paul Chryst’s offense. He could make an impact as soon as this season.

Despite the obvious logjam at receiver on this year’s squad, there just aren’t many players on the roster with Guerendo’s electrifying playmaking ability. He is a big play threat each time he touches the ball.

This fall, look for Guerendo to get some looks on those jet sweeps Chryst loves to whip occasionally. The Badgers could also give him a shot on some screen passes and in the return game.

Long-term outlook

Many Wisconsin fans are of the opinion that in order for the program to take the next step and regularly compete for College Football Playoff appearances, the Badgers need to add more elite speed and athleticism to the roster, particularly at receiver and in the secondary.

Look no further than last year’s Big Ten Championship matchup against Ohio State for evidence of this. In that matchup, the Badgers’  lack of speed in comparison to the Buckeyes was painfully obvious.

Guerendo is the type of fast, athletic playmaker that Wisconsin needs more of in order to compete for national championships each year. Badger fans should be very excited about his potential and what he brings to the program.
