The defensive line played better this week than last week just like it should have. With two new starters at the defensive end position, things weren’t going to just click right away. Those new starters also got a boost of help from Isaiahh Loudermilk last week too, who returned from an injury he suffered in the offseason.

Olive Sagapolu and Matt Henningsen both recorded a tackle for loss and Kayden Lyles recovered a fumble for the unit. Loudermilk had two tackles on the day. To go along with those individual stats, New Mexico only managed 77 rushing yards and an abysmal 2.6 yards-per-carry on the day.
The Badger defense may have some question marks, but it’s not because of the lack of bodies. While there is inexperience, there are also plenty of talented players that can rotate in and out on every play to fit the defensive play call. It’s a benefit not a lot of programs have.
The defensive line will only get better. Adding Loudermilk back into the fold helps an incredible amount too. The timetable for his eventual return left Badger fans wondering if his first game back would be against Iowa, or perhaps later. Making his return a full two weeks before that game is huge. He’ll be able to take his time getting back up to speed before helping the Badgers get to 1-0 in conference play.
