On paper, this looks ideal but the timing is actually terrible.

Wisconsin's top basketball recruiting target is in-state 4-star Donovan Davis. He's one of the best players in the country, and he's determined to take four visits this winter: Nebraska, Iowa State, Wisconsin, and Marquette. The Wisconsin visit on paper looks like a huge potential statement in his recruiting as the Badgers will be taking on the Purdue Boilermakers, but it's actually not at an ideal time at all.

When that game was scheduled, fans and students moaned that it was scheduled for Christmas break. Many of the students won't be back on campus for that game, and it could end up swaying momentum towards Purdue even though it's a home game for Wisconsin. When it comes to recruiting, the student section and fans also play a huge role.

Donovan Davis actually may have picked a terrible time to come. Hopefully, the game itself provides enough juice to pack the Kohl Center and create the impression needed to keep Davis home.

Another astute observation you can make from his visit list is that Marquette is getting the final visit. That's not ideal either, as Marquette also works hard to keep home the top in-state players. Being the last program to pitch to Davis will give the Golden Eagles an edge.

Between Davis coming over Christmas break and Marquette getting the final visit, this is a couple of not ideal circumstances. However, Greg Gard has made Davis a priority, and that may matter more than anything else.

Gard was the first to offer the 6'7 forward and has been personally active in his recruitment. His rise in the state of Wisconsin has been incredible over the last year. His high school play has helped showcase his abilities, in which he led his team to a WIAA state tournament appearance for the first time in decades. He was also a star in the AAU circuit, playing on a team that also produced Will Garlock and Zach Kinziger.

He is arguably the best player in the state of Wisconsin in a tough battle with Gonzaga commit Dooney Johnson. Johnson has been in that top spot for most of his high school career, but Davis has pushed for the crown.

Regardless, he would be a big get for Gard and the Badgers, and ideally, none of the visit issues will derail those plans to bring him to Madison.
