Greg Gard is a known transfer portal winner, but it's almost always after the fact. Typically, in the midst of the transfer portal, he and Wisconsin basketball are flying under the radar. Most pundits aren't excited about Wisconsin in the portal until players like Nick Boyd and John Tonje prove that Gard knows how to haul in a great portal class.
This year is no exception. Absolutely no one is talking about the Badgers in the transfer portal, until Andy Katz took notice. He jumped on the Big Ten social media today to detail how he's impressed again with Greg Gard's portalling ability. "They brought in winners," Katz said. While Wisconsin almost flew under the radar again, even with Katz, as he has them 8th on his Big Ten list of "winning in the portal."

Katz starts his praise of Gard and Wisconsin's portal haul with Eian Elmer. Elmer is clearly the prized player in the transfer portal class for the Badgers. A player who was a glue guy (pun intended) for the undefeated Miami (OH) Redhawks last year. He is a wing that can get to the hoop and make shots from every level, and yet loves to play defense. A classic Gard guy. Katz said, "Elmer will have an impact with the Badgers."
He goes on to bring up Trey Autry and Victory Onuetu as the other two big pickups for the Badgers. Onuetu highlights it as a great grab because he also made the NCAA Tournament with Hofstra. He noticed a theme with the additions: proven winners at the mid-major level now ready to help Wisconsin win.
The part of Gard's transfer portal strategy that Katz didn't mention is that Gard is known to bring in high-quality international players, too. He did it last year with Aleksas Bieliauskas and Hayden Jones. This season, he's brought in Owen Foxwell, Jackson Ball, and even Isaac Riddle.
Let Wisconsin fly under the radar, Gard will do what he always does, bring together a team of underrated players and bring them to a winning season.
