Everything was turning up for the Wisconsin Badgers today in the world of hockey. First, the underdogs of the Frozen Four knocked off North Dakota to advance to the National Championship game. Then Cole Caufield did something that's relatively rare in hockey history, especially Wisconsin Badger hockey history. Caufield scored his 50th goal of the NHL season.

Cole Caufield makes hockey history for the Montreal Canadiens with 50 goals

It made it even more special as Caufield reached this milestone for the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens are the ones that hold the banner for the first 50-goal scorer: Maurice Richard. It's a historic franchise that hasn't seen this sort of goal-scoring ability since 1990.
The day the Badgers broke a decades-long drought in the National Championship game is the same day that Caufield broke another decades-long drought. It's a day the Badgers won't forget, especially not Caufield. Nor his father, who was taking in the scene as Caufield scored the historic goal.

For the Canadiens, this Caufield is the seventh player to hit the 50-goal mark. The list is Stéphane Richer, Guy Lafleur, Pierre Larouche, Steve Shutt, Bernie Geoffrion, and Maurice Richard. For a franchise that's over 100 years old, that's a short list. So what Caufield did is impressive. Canadien fans are celebrating even more than Badger fans.
The list is even shorter for the Badgers. Wisconsin has only had one other 50-goal scorer in the NHL: Dany Heatley. Heatley did it twice, both times for the Ottawa Senators. The Badgers have had plenty of other 40-goal seasons from former players, but for now, it's only Caufield and Heatley.
What a day for the Badgers. What a day for Caufield. Wisconsin is a hockey school, and both Caufield and the Badgers showed it off on the same day. On Wisconsin!
