Dusty May sent shockwaves through the college basketball world after signing a deal to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. His departure for the NBA comes the season after May brought the Michigan Wolverines a National Championship. His departure will open up a limited-time transfer window for all the current Michigan players. Any Wolverines who don't want the uncertainty will have 15-days to decide to enter their name in the open portal.
This could lead to even more chaos. Michigan has worked hard already in just hours to retain the roster by placing the interim head coach tag on Michigan assistant Mike Boynton Jr. It seems as if the goal is for roster retention. Boynton could get a real shot to prove he is the next head coach, but his time as a head coach for Oklahoma State went miserably.
If there are two names to keep an eye on, even if unlikely, for Wisconsin, it's these two: Oscar Goodman and Lincoln Cosby.
Oscar Goodman - 6'7 sophomore
Goodman is an interesting one because he's due for more playing time next year, but could find himself buried on the bench again. His talent is there, and if he weren't on a team like Michigan, he would find some extra minutes. The big reason Wisconsin could be in play is that he is a former New Zealand teammate of Hayden Jones and Jackson Ball.
Goodman and Jones spent time as teenagers playing alongside each other for the 2022 FIBA U-15 Oceania Championship. Goodman and Ball played together for both the 2023 FIBA U-16 Asian Championship and the 2024 FIBA U-17 World Cup. They all know each other, and you can bet there would be some recruiting happening as Wisconsin could use a player exactly like Goodman. Gard loves the positionless forward that can drop buckets from every level.

Lincoln Cosby - 6'9 freshman
This one is a bit more of a long shot, but there's a reason it could work. Cosby is a 6'9 forward from Montverde Academy in Florida and was a top-10 recruit in the last class. That last part is why it may be a stretch. However, he tore his ACL as he was finishing his high school season and will need to sit out for an entire season.
His injury puts his future timeline in a bit of flux. Add in the fact that he lost his coach, and the fact that Wisconsin will have a clear opening at big next season, could make things nice and sweet for Cosby. He's said that a major reason he chose to go to Michigan was because of his relationship with Dusty May. Depending on how things shake out (because Boynton was a top recruiter for him), he could be one of the first players to poke their head into the transfer portal.
If he does, Gard should jump in, as it will be a slightly less competitive field with the injury, but Gard has a season to wait anyway while Nolan Winter finishes his final year.
