Wisconsin's Nick Boyd is considered a player on the fringes of the NBA Draft. He's projected to be barely inside the second round or just a few spots away from being included. It really depends on how he lands on the NBA teams' Big Board. He clearly has NBA talent, but the drawbacks are harder to ignore: he's not a big NBA guard, he is still developing a consistent shot, and he's already 25. But man, can he score, and boy, does he love to compete and win.
There's now an NBA coach who would love to draft Nick Boyd. Earlier today, it was announced that National Championship coach Dusty May is leaving the Michigan Wolverines for the Dallas Mavericks. A shocking turn of events, but one that could boost Nick Boyd's draft stock. May and Boyd go way back to their time at FAU when both were cutting their teeth in college basketball.
Nick Boyd ended up transferring to San Diego State after the impressive FAU Final Four run, and Dusty May got the Michigan job after Juwan Howard fell on his butt. When Boyd transferred to Wisconsin and landed in the Big Ten, along with May. Michigan's head coach couldn't stop talking about Boyd. He loves Boyd and was clear that he would love to coach him again.

It started at Big Ten Media Days when Dusty May said, "That's my guy! He's one of the big reasons why I'm sitting at this stage now...He essentially became a coach, an assistant coach to me that year, and some of our conversations still stick with me to this day," He finished his praise of Boyd by saying that Boyd fits his style really well and fits the culture at FAU and will "be part of my life forever."
It wasn't just that praise; every time Wisconsin and Michigan saw each other, May was quick to praise Boyd. He's called him a tremendous competitor and someone he loved to coach. Do not be surprised if the Dallas Mavericks select Nick Boyd or if the Mavericks are the first to offer him a contract after the NBA Draft concludes.
The Dallas Mavericks sit at No. 9 overall. Boyd will not be picked in this spot, no matter how much May likes him. That 30th pick feels a bit too high for Boyd, too, and 48 may even be a little bit of a stretch, but with only 60 picks in the draft, don't be surprised. Also, don't be shocked if Dallas slides a few picks down and grabs him late...maybe like 56 or 58.
Or this could all be wrong, and May won't have enough influence to bring him in; maybe the GM isn't ready to give May that much control. Or even that May doesn't chase after Boyd even if the point guard is "his guy!" The NBA is a wild world, and the Draft can go in a lot of directions. However, if there's a team and coach to take a flier on Nick Boyd, it's Dusty May and the Dallas Mavericks.
