The Indianapolis Colts training camp begins in just a few days on July 23rd, and Wisconsin fans will be paying attention to former Badger Hunter Wohler. However, minicamp may have revealed more about how the Colts plan to use him in his rookie season. He seems to be competing with Rodney Thomas for that third safety role. The Colts have several defensive looks where three safeties play simultaneously.

The Locked on Colts Podcast noticed during minicamps that Hunter Wohler was playing in three-safety sets. "Not saying minicamp is the most indicative of the regular season, but you saw three safety sets on the field. You saw Rodney Thomas coming in on a lot of third-down looks. You saw Hunter Wohler getting into the box with two safeties over the top with the second and third team."

Hunter Wohler is gearing up for training camp and finding his role on the Colts

The interesting thing about this quote above from Locked On Podcast is that when the Colts drafted Hunter Wohler, he was listed as a linebacker. Therefore, it's a curiosity that they noticed Wohler in the box with two safeties over the top. There may still be a defensive set where they envision him in a linebacker-safety hybrid role.

The Colts actually need depth at both positions, and it may be that they envision him as a deep option for linebacker. The Colts also use nickel sets and would need someone like Wohler to play this linebacker-safety role.

Wohler impressed at minicamps, and it will be something to watch for training camps. He had some big plays even to impress the beat writers, which is hard for a seventh-round pick to do.

The Indianapolis Colts begin training camp on July 23rd, and more information will be available about how the Colts will utilize Wohler.
