Former Badger star safety Hunter Wohler is impressing reporters, coaches, and other players at the Indianapolis Colts mandatory minicamp. The seventh-round pick has been mentioned with emphasis in the journal of the Colts beat writer for the Indy Star on both days of the minicamp.
On the first day, it sounds like Hunter Wohler may have had a hard hit, even though those aren't supposed to be allowed during minicamps. But he must have done it in a way that impressed, not penalized, his explosion. On the second day of minicamps, Joe Ericson of the Indy Star had this quote in his notebook (published online):
"Rookie safety Hunter Wohler found a way to turn heads again. One day after laying a huge hit, Wohler made a key stop to keep Laquon Treadwell from scoring, then broke up Leonard’s two-point conversion attempt in the end zone."Joel Ericson, Indy Star
Indianapolis beat writers are very impressed with rookie Hunter Wohler
This is great news for the former Badgers star. Since Wohler was a seventh-round pick, there's no guarantee that he will even make the roster in the fall, much less make an impact. Seventh-round picks are often known as dice rolls from General Managers, but everything seems to be looking positive for Wohler.
While it would take a lot for Wohler to find a way into a starting role, he is making enough noise to find himself as a quality depth piece for the Colts, which is precisely what they need at safety but also at linebacker.
Linebacker may sound funny to the Wisconsin fan as he never played the position at Wisconsin, but the Colts originally drafted him as a linebacker and listed him as such. They've since begun listing him at safety again. It could be that they may try him in a nickel-style role and provide depth for multiple positions.
