ESPN's win projection for Wisconsin would lead to 'lights out' for Luke Fickell

ESPN doesn't have a lot of faith in Luke Fickell this next season.

Luke Fickell is in a make-or-break year for Wisconsin. He's yet to have a year that showcases he's the right coach for the future of the Badgers. He's worked through coordinators, injuries, and players coming and going, and has yet to prove he's the guy. Last season, he was essentially given one more chance in 2026 by former Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh. That safety net is gone in multiple ways, and he needs at least six wins if not seven or eight.

ESPN's latest Big Ten projections do not have much hope in Fickell turning it around this season. According to Bill Connelly's latest "Big Ten Football Preview," the Badgers are projected at "62nd in SP+, 5.4 average wins (3.5 in the Big Ten)." That just won't do it for Fickell. A five-win season would send him packing, especially if only three are in the Big Ten.

Now the 3.5 number, if you round up, is 4 wins. That would be the ticket as four wins in the conference, and there are two non-conference wins on the table with Western Illinois and Eastern Michigan on the schedule. Those six wins would probably save him the job. However, if he gets the under on the 3.5 and only wins those two non-conference games beyond the three Big Ten wins, that's lights out for Fickell.

ESPN has a projection for Wisconsin football that will make Badger fans cringe

Connelly actually seems to be higher on the Badgers this season than he was last year: "This year's roster is more talented than last year's." He goes on to say, "I'm not sure where the bar is set for Fickell this season and what he needs to do to earn a fifth season, but I'm confident that the Badgers will improve."

The schedule does set up really nicely for Luke Fickell to turn things around this season. Wisconsin will only see one of the top-5 projected Big Ten teams by ESPN, Penn State. And will see three of the bottom-5 teams in the same projection. Maybe those are the exact three that ESPN is giving to Wisconsin. As those are the only three teams rated below the Badgers.

Minnesota is rated at the same spot as Wisconsin, with 3.5 wins, and whoever wins the axe may be the one that gets the over on the 3.5, and the loser is the under. If the projections play out as ESPN thinks.

Wisconsin also has UCLA on the schedule, and while the talent has also increased a ton this season for the Bruins, it's another winnable game. Maryland is the final winnable game that wouldn't be considered a big upset. If Wisconsin can win all the winnable games, the Badgers will walk away with six conference wins and two non-conference wins; that's a great season, and Fickell will walk into next season with a pep in his step.

However, there are just too many coin-flip games for Wisconsin, and ESPN doesn't have a high belief that the Badgers can pull it off. Rightfully so, as the Badgers have proven nothing under Fickell over the last few years. The projection makes sense, but it's going to be wrong.
