Luke Fickell added another coveted player yesterday in 3-star edge Brody Pfannenstiel, who flipped his commitment from Texas Tech to Wisconsin. Now, Fickell will be working hard to retain all of the talent they've added this year. It's shaping up to be his most impressive recruiting class ever. The final rankings won't be posted until signing day in December, but for now, it's a top-20 class.
The 2026 recruiting class finished ranked 78th in the composite ranking on 24/7 Sports. That's terrible to not even be inside the top-75. Ultimately, that class only had 14 total enrollees, and to cap it all off, it only had a single composite 4-star. If there is one metric to consider the drastic change, it's that, the upgrade in talent.
Rankings aren't everything, and anyone will tell you that, but it's not like they don't matter at all. If we are looking at a bell curve, 4 and 5-star players end up being better than 2 and 3-star players. There are exceptions in both camps, but more often than not, that's just how it works. Wisconsin has EIGHT composite 4-stars in this class. That's impressive, and many of the 3-stars could jump to 4-stars in the fall. Players like Pfannenstiel are considered dark horses to make a big rise.
Wisconsin has 8 (composite) 4-stars in this class.

Last year, the Badgers finished with ONE. 😮
Wisconsin has 8 composite 4-stars in the 2027 recruiting class, an upgrade of 7

It's huge news that this class jumped a ton from last season. Seven more 4-stars than 2026. The 2026 recruiting class was ranked 78th with only a single 4-star composite player (Brady Bekkenhuis). However, the year before in 2025, Wisconsin had seven, and in 2024, Fickell had nine. So while this class is still ranked higher than either of those classes at No. 18, Fickell is getting back to bringing in top-end talent.
That 2025 class had Mason Posa, Eugene Hilton Jr., and Cooper Catalano. The 2024 class featured Kevin Heywood, Dillin Jones, Emerson Mandell, Xavier Lucas (boooo), and Grant Stec.
Now, that talent hasn't exactly worked out to a good record, as you can see, but it's only one piece to the puzzle. There's obviously coaching, development, talent, play-calling, and quarterback play that all add up. Fickell hasn't yet had all of those click yet, but a disappointing 2026 class made many wonder if it was the end of the road, since nothing else was clicking either.
The reality is, this recruiting class is helping save his job. It won't get him completely off the hot seat, but it does buy a little margin. Without a good class, Fickell would have to find eight or nine wins to save his job. With a good recruiting class, six to seven may keep him around.
However, first, he has to keep this class around. He has 23 commitments, and eight of them are 4-stars, and many of them are from in-state. That's all well and good, but last year, he lost two 4-stars at the buzzer, as they flipped to other programs. His goal is to prevent that this season and then, of course, win football games in the fall.
