Falcons waive former Badger Vinny Anthony II, but there's still reason for optimism

Somewhat disappointing news hit the Wisconsin Badgers fandom’s timeline this morning, as fan-favorite wideout and NFL hopeful Vinny Anthony II was waived by the Atlanta Falcons. This had become heavily rumored in recent days, largely in part to a decreased role on the field and some comments made by Anthony’s coaching staff, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise to see him go.

However, it was still tough to see him not be able to make the 53-man roster, especially considering all the positive buzz he had built throughout camp. Seemingly every report that came out about Anthony was positive over the past few months, as Falcons media and fans were raving over his versatility and playmaking ability.

Anthony finished his three preseason games with eight grabs for 69 yards, along with returning five kicks for 170 yards, including a 52-yard return in his most recent outing. He also was a steady hand in other ways for Atlanta’s special teams unit, operating as a gunner for the team and, in general, doing whatever he could to make an impact.

In the end, however, it still wasn’t enough. Despite all the good he did, Anthony couldn’t find a way onto the roster from the get-go. With all that said, hope for his future in the NFL is by no means a lost cause, as Anthony will still have plenty of chances to prove himself moving forward.

Hope is Not Lost

Odds are he won’t be picked up off waivers, meaning he should be returning to the Falcons’ facilities very soon to play his part on the practice squad. If he can continue to show out there, making all the kinds of plays he has throughout camp, then there is a good chance that he can get a call-up at some point during the season.

Working even further in his favor, it did seem as if he was one of the last guys left off the roster, meaning that even if Atlanta’s staff didn’t think he was ready to play right away, they still at least felt as if he could provide something for the team in the future.

It’s been no secret that the Falcons’ receiver room is a bit thin, too. Between injuries and unproven talent, there is plenty of room for a guy like Anthony to wiggle his way into the mix if a couple of things fall into place.

Nonetheless, it’s a small roadblock for what should still be a fruitful professional tenure for the Wisconsin alum.
