Former Badger Billy Edwards Jr. may have lost his main competition at UNC

Edwards has only one player left to beat for the Tar Heels starting job.

Most Wisconsin Badger fans are under the impression that Billy Edwards Jr. went to North Carolina and Bill Belichick to be the primary signal caller. However, that wasn't the case. Belichick brought in three transfer quarterbacks to duel it out for the spot. The best gets the gig, and the rest are backups. Edwards now has a much cleaner shot to the top as one of those quarterbacks, Taron Dickens from Western Carolina, has decommitted from the Tar Heels.

Now the two quarterbacks fighting for the job are Edwards and Miles O'Neill, a transfer from Texas A&M. It does still seem like it's Edwards' job to lose, especially after Dickens decided to change course. O'Neill may have a chance to pass Edwards, but he's unproven in his time as an Aggie.

Wisconsin fans will be curious what happens to Edwards in North Carolina, but there won't be many who root for him. There is a bitter taste in the mouth of most Badger fans as Edwards has a tainted image in his one year in Madison. It's a confusing saga, and the stories are all mixed, but he was brought in to be the starter, got injured in the first game, forced his way back against Maryland, and then basically wouldn't play again.

It's hard to know how bad the injury was during that time, but it felt to fans and even to Luke Fickell as if he was holding out so he could get another year in college after his early-season injury. As Wisconsin was throwing up bad quarterbacks week after week, fans were hoping Edwards would return, but he never did. He then transferred.

Now, he's trying to use his last year of eligibility to put up numbers in North Carolina, but there are many jaded Wisconsin fans hoping he loses the job to O'Neill. Right or wrong, it is the way fans feel.

Edwards now may have the inside track to the starting spot without Dickens, but it isn't a sure thing, and UNC is a bit of a circus anyway.
