Former Badger goes down with injury ahead of promising rookie season

After an impressive performance against the Baltimore Ravens in last week's preseason game, former Badger Hunter Wohler went down early with an injury on Saturday. He notched a team-high nine tackles last week, but his day was cut short after he hobbled off the field in the first quarter. The Indianapolis Colts' safety only logged two tackles before the team announced he would be shut down for the rest of the game against the Green Bay Packers with a foot injury.

The Wisconsin native was starting for the already injured Nick Cross, and now adds to an already long list of hurt Colts. Before the injury, Wohler was really settling in and making a name for himself despite his long odds to make the team.

The Colts need former Badger Hunter Wohler more than ever now

Wohler was a seventh-round pick for the Colts in April's draft and faced an uphill battle to make the roster. But with his impressive camp and strong play in the first preseason game, he looks more and more likely to be a lock. The injury however, complicates things. Hopefully, the team just rested him for precautionary reasons, but if it turns out to be something more serious, his rookie season could be in jeopardy.

With Wohler's ability to play safety and even linebacker, he's a versatile chess piece on a Colts defense that has gotten decimated with injuries. If Wohler can't suit up moving forward, they'll have to get creative replacing their depth.

The Colts love the way he's played in training camp and preseason. There are plenty of talk of not only Wohler making the roster but also even having snaps both on special teams and as a depth for safeties and linebackers. He's proving he can make tackles and is an absolute ball-hawk.
