Greg Gard and the men's basketball team took some time after their offseason basketball practice yesterday to speak with the media. Nick Boyd is clearly already turning heads with his speed, leadership, and athleticism. However, both Boyd and Gard said there's still something he's trying to work on as he makes his move to Wisconsin: learning his teammates and how they play.

Boyd said, "I'm still a bit sped up right now just because I'm trying to learn the guys and the offense as a whole. Once I get to pick my spots and go fast, really push it down, and even go slow and pick them apart, that's going to be fun."

Greg Gard was very high on the praise for Boyd, saying that immediately, his speed was obvious. His ability to get up and down the court is impressive. His leadership is important, and he's a vocal player, always talking and communicating. This will be a key to the season. Gard also said, though, that he's trying to get Boyd to slow down a bit and make smart decisions.

"We need to clean up his decision making. Part of that is who he's playing with and getting used to each other. The first couple of days we should have put helmets on players. A few almost had concussions with the passes he threw. It was like, 'Hey, get ready, he sees you and it's coming!'"

The praise for Boyd is exciting, as Wisconsin will go into the season with a true point guard and a player who is electric for the Badgers alongside John Blackwell and Andrew Rohde. Boyd is already declaring, "This is going to be one of the best trios in the country."

As Boyd gets settled in and learns to share the ball with his players, it will only get better and better. But that's precisely what these offseason workouts are for.
