Greg Gard finally has his first portal addition after losing nearly his whole starting lineup to the portal or graduation. The only player returning from the starting five is Nolan Winter. The rest are gone, and the hardest one to lose is John Blackwell. It didn't come as a shock, but it's hard to find 19 points per game and a player who can take over college basketball games.
However, Gard's first portal addition may be his next transfer success. Gard has been known to pull diamonds out of the rough in the transfer portal. Did he do it again, but this time with George Washington guard Trey Autry, the son of former Syracuse coach Red Autry?

Trey Autry may be the next hidden star for Wisconsin or could be a depth piece

Autry has spent his first three years of college at George Washington, but as he heads into his senior year, he wants to see whether the transfer portal could offer him a new opportunity. Many high majors came calling as he's a reliable player who has a shooter's touch. He can get points at all three levels and shot over 38% from 3pt range the last two seasons.
He averaged 11 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. While he can get hot and had 16 of his 34 games in double-digits last season, he's not known for taking over games. His highest point total last season was 24 (and that was the only 20+ point game), and that was against Richmond.
It's hard to know with Greg Gard because he's pulled rabbits out of his hat and stars out of the portal multiple times. But this may end up being a depth piece, or it could be an example of a quiet John Blackwell replacement.
Autry does play the same position and has a similar body type at 6'4 and 210 (Blackwell is 6'4 and 203). But until we see how the class rounds out, it's hard to know if this is going to be a Braeden Carrington replacement or a John Blackwell. Gard works magic, so stay tuned.
