Wisconsin fans couldn't believe how badly the refs botched a call that led to a Notre Dame touchdown. The only touchdown the Irish scored in the first half came from a missed call and then a replay review that "upheld" the call. Notre Dame was given the ball at the 11-yard line, and it wasn't hard to get in from there. Let's set the scene, as now it's two days in a row that replay review has had clear evidence and yet somehow the refs have "seen something else" to give the favorites a touchdown.
Notre Dame was kicking off after a 3-point conversion, and Harrison Bortolotti muffed the catch; the ball was recovered by Kahanu Kia. Or at least that was the original call. Upon review, he juggled the ball while rolling on the ground and never had possession until his foot was well out of bounds. It was an easy reversal.
The entire TV crew was in agreement, and yet the refs came out and said he did recover it in bounds. Rules analyst Terry McAulay was shocked by the call and couldn't believe the refs didn't overturn it.
Wisconsin fans then lost their minds as Notre Dame scored four plays later. One of those Wisconsin fans was JJ Watt, who simply said, "How could you possibly uphold that?!" And reminded everyone that it's been a rough start to the college football world with replay review. See, Michigan vs. Western Michigan controversy. Which, if you missed that whole thing, do you live under a rock?
Instant Replay off to a ROUGH start in the college football world…

How could you possibly uphold that?!
Watt wasn't the only one; he joined a big chorus of fans who couldn't believe it. Other fanbases also agreed; it felt like an inside job. Here are some the better social media posts on X about it.
Wisconsin fans and the rest of the world react to the botched replay review in the Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin game
College football officiating feels like corruption

That’s INSANE. Every single person saw no control. What the fuck are we doing?!?!?

21 point favorites and need the refs to win

THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST CALLS YOU WILL EVER SEE BY COLLEGE FOOTBALL REFS.

99 OUT OF 100 TIMES, THIS IS CALLED OUT OF BOUNDS AND NOT A FUMBLE RECOVERY.
The refs screw Wisconsin and give Notre Dame a massive gift.

NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay is fed up. He correctly points out Notre Dame recovered the Wisconsin punt fumble out of bounds, but officials blow another call and gift Notre Dame points. (The personal foul call was also absurd.)

As you can see from the above posts, some of these are national names. People who are tired of seeing two days in a row feel this "corruption." It was absurd, and there was really no reason it should have been upheld, and it swung the momentum of the game. Or at least did for a minute.
Wisconsin, as a team, didn't let it beat them down. Instead, they found their own touchdown and were able to jump back to a tie. It went to 10-10 and then 13-10 at the half. That's a big win for the Badgers, who came into the game as 20.5 underdogs.
If the Badgers end up winning the game, it will be the whistle that disappears; if somehow Notre Dame wins by a touchdown or less, it will be one of the primary talking points all week. It will get lumped into the controversy with Michigan vs. Western Michigan and the nonsense that was pulled in that game. With two favorites- ranked favorites- getting gifted a touchdown by the refs when it was clearly the wrong call.
