If you live under a Wisconsin rock, you probably haven’t heard that Wisconsin is bringing Culver’s patches to their uniforms. It will be a patch on football, basketball, and men’s hockey (for now). According to the Wisconsin press release, “Culver’s is the on-court logo partner at Wisconsin’s Kohl Center. Now, it also will create expansive opportunities for student-athlete through NIL collaboration and unique content creation to enhance engagement with the passionate Badger fanbase.“
Among Wisconsin fans, it came with some mixed reviews. Basically, three varieties of reviews. There were those who loved it, those who hated it, and those who accepted it for where college sports are headed, so I guess the last one is begrudgingly. Badger legend JJ Watt also weighed in with a strong opinion, but his was full of delight.
Watt seems to be a mix of both “love it” and “accepts it.” He starts with a “If there had to be one…” A clear acknowledgment of where college sports (particularly football) is headed; more and more money and sponsorships are flowing into the sport. But he pivots quickly to, “…this is it. Culver’s Forever. On Wisconsin!”

Watt’s opinion will carry a lot of weight with Wisconsin fans. He’s a Badger legend but also seems to understand the nature of the beast in the modern era. It helps that he’s kept his ear to the ground and his feet in the mix. He’s been an active fan online of Wisconsin since graduating, but also been in commentating for the NFL and even owns a soccer (futbol) team. This all gives him a bit more of a full perspective.
Add in the fact that he is vocal about his love for Culver’s. One fan asked a follow-up question to his post about the Culver’s patch on Wisconsin jerseys: “What is your go-to Culver’s order?” Watt was quick to answer, and it wasn’t a simple answer or a simple order. See his order in the social media post below:

There’s a lot of outrage over the direction of college athletics, with more and more things like this happening. It’s smart of Wisconsin to start with a very iconic Wisconsin brand. However, fans are worried about the slippery slope, and money continues to pour into college athletics. What starts as Culver’s may end up as some random money grab, and things will continue to spiral.
At the end of the day, if Culver’s helps Wisconsin football have more money to compete and get wins, so be it. And good for Wisconsin for keeping it in-state and helping ease the transition to more of a pro-style model when it comes to sponsorships.
As JJ Watt said, if it had to be one, this one feels right. Culver’s is the right sponsor for Wisconsin. Now to convert the cash into wins, that’s the real challenge.
