John Tonje landing with these 2 teams in NBA Draft could derail his development

John Tonje is projected to be a middle 40 pick but could foreseeably be drafted anywhere between the bottom of the first round and all throughout the second. That means when picking teams that aren't great fits and could stall his NBA development, the sky is the limit. However, two stand out: the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns.

Los Angeles Lakers

This would place him at the 55th pick, which is already not great for Tonje. However, the Lakers are a strange team for development. It seems like many development players do better when they leave the Lakers, not while they are there. They often force players into spots or roles that don't help them.

They also have a bit of a win-now mode and would need him to come in now, which Tonje may or may not be ready for. He wouldn't get any on-ball creativity, and that could hurt him overall. He'd either only ride the bench or get stuck in the Lakers' G-League without much oversight.

Phoenix Suns

The other bad fit is the Phoenix Suns. They have two picks in the range of Tonje, the 29th and the 52nd. It would be sweet to see him drafted in the first round if he were grabbed at 29, but the fit is poor. They only recently added a G-League team, so it's a work in progress, so if he ended up on a two-way contract, that wouldn't be ideal. The Suns are built around stars and minimum contracts. They don't really utilize or use young wings.

This means that if Tonje goes to the Suns, he will have no real pathway to minutes and could get stuck in a system that isn't known for development.

There are other teams that wouldn't work, really any playoff teams that need Tonje to perform right away may not be ideal. However, there's a case to be made that he performs best in that spotlight. Who knows? He would need a year or two with usable minutes in a system that lets him grow.
